Stenson leads Nedbank Challenge

12/04/2008 - Sun City, South Africa (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Henrik Stenson fired a nine-under 63 on Thursday to match the course record and take the first-round lead of the Nedbank Golf Challenge.

Stenson matched Ernie Els' course record at the Gary Player Country Club on Thursday. Els originally set the mark in the final round in 2002 en route to victory.

"It was a great day," said Stenson, the 12th-ranked player in the world. "I've had some good scores here in the past and it's a course I enjoy."

Rory Sabbatini is alone in second place after a four-under 68. Englishman Lee Westwood is in third with a two-under 70.

Stenson flew out of the gate on Thursday with three straight birdies, but the round was derailed thanks to a bogey at the par-three seventh. He atoned for that error with back-to-back birdies from the eighth.

The Swede birdied the 10th hole, then parred the 11th and 12th. Stenson raced up the leaderboard thanks to a birdie-eagle-birdie flurry from No. 13, then parred his last three to match the course record.

Stenson rode some momentum into this week's championship. He teamed with Robert Karlsson to win last week's World Cup for Sweden.

"I was a little bit tired coming into the tournament, but the birdies came in bunches and I sank a 12-footer on the 13th which started a nice little run for me," said Stenson. "My game is obviously on and I just need to keep it going tomorrow. It's a strong field and even though I've opened some ground on them, I need to keep my head down tomorrow and stick to business."

Karlsson, Sergio Garcia, Skins Game winner K.J. Choi, defending champion Trevor Immelman, James Kingston and a returning Luke Donald share fourth place at even-par 72. Donald missed most of the last few months of the 2008 season because of a wrist injury.

Justin Rose and Kenny Perry are knotted in 10th at one-over 73, followed by Miguel Angel Jimenez, who shot a three-over 75.

With the field of 64/65 set, MySportsbook.com has the Florida Gators as the 4-1 favorite to successfully defend their National Championship.  Men’s Division-1 College Basketball has not seen a team repeat as National Champions since Duke won back to back championships in ’91 & ‘92.  After losing three out of four late in the season, the Gators are full of momentum as they won their last four games by an average of 18 points.  Not surprisingly, right behind the Gators are the other three top seeds: Kansas 5-1, UNC 6-1, and Ohio State 7-1.  Many consider Kansas to be the hottest team in the country, having won 11 straight. With Kansas, it is hard to ignore all of the early exits from the “dance” in recent years.  With an impressive ACC Tournament, UNC ensured themselves the other top seed.  UNC has about as much talent as any other team in the tournament but with a team that’s best players are primarily freshman and sophomores, could youth be a concern.  Behind freshman sensation, Greg Oden, OSU will look to do what their football team failed to do just a few months earlier.  OSU seems to have peeked at the right time, as they currently have a 17 game winning streak.  Since the tournament field was expanded in 1985, there has never been an instance where all four #1 seeds advanced to the Final Four.  It is obvious that each of the top seeds have the talent to make it through to Atlanta.  But as everyone knows, when makes the NCAA Tournament so special are all of the spoilers and “Cinderella” stories that knock off the favorites on a daily basis.
