Panthers edge Sabres in battle of goaltenders

Hockey Betting Lines

12/04/2008 - Sunrise, FL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Craig Anderson stopped 45 shots as the Florida Panthers downed the Buffalo Sabres, 2-1, at BankAtlantic Center.

Greg Campbell had a goal and an assist while Keith Ballard also lit the lamp for the Panthers, who have won three straight.

"It's just one of those nights where they're throwing everything at the net and our guys did a terrific job of cleaning up the rebounds," said Anderson. "I was giving the other team extra shots. But, on the good side of it, my guys let me see the puck almost every single shot. I'll stop 100 shots I can see versus ten shots that I can't."

Ales Kotalik had a goal and Ryan Miller made 23 stops in the loss for the Sabres, who have dropped their last three games.

"This is a really good hockey team, in my eyes, a strong enough group to figure out what to do and how to get through this and be a better team night in and night out," said Kotalik.

Florida scored two goals separated by 35 seconds in the second period to take the lead.

Skating down the ice, from the right side of the net, Mike Frolik threw a backhand pass to the other side of the net where Campbell gathered the puck and threw a wrister past Miller with 4:18 left in the second.

Moments later, Ballard's wrister from the left circle on the rush gave the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

On the power play, the Sabres made it a one-goal game as Kotalik's one-timer from the top of the left circle got through a screen and past Anderson.

However, Anderson was able to keep Buffalo from netting the equalizer as he finished the third period with 17 saves to help Florida to the win.

Buffalo dominated play for much of the first period and threw 18 shots on net, but Anderson made all the saves to keep Buffalo off the board. Miller stopped 10 shots in the frame.

Academy Award Betting Odds for Best Picture Offer Great Value

If there is any category that is not an obvious win for any one nominee in this year's Academy Awards, it would be for Best Picture.  Sure the Departed is a 5/7 favorite, but that's hardly anything when we look at Helen Mirren and her "out-of-reach" 1 to 40 odds (which means you would win a whopping $1 for every $40 bet).

For value, take a look at MySportsbook.com Oscars betting odds on my personal favorite, The Queen - a remarkable 12 to 1 long shot.  The film hasn't won any pre-awards for Best Picture (compared to The Departed and Little Miss Sunshine), but there is a tremendous following and it is a strong enough film to warrant a surprise win.

TV Guide advises Oscar watchers should be cautioned not to discount the  drama "Babel" with its strong social themes about overcoming communication gaps among people of different cultures.

"While 'Babel' lost several guild awards to 'Sunshine' and 'Departed,'  it still enjoys loyal support, and historically Oscar voters favor dramas with social messages over comedies like 'Sunshine' and violent crime movies like 'Departed'."

"It hasn't done well in the guilds, which means there isn't much industry support," said Tom O'Neil of awards site TheEnvelope.com, "But several critics are expecting it to win, and that gets my attention." Babel had 7 to 2 odds at press time.

Who is to say independently produced Little Miss Sunshine won't be this year's Crash.  Last year, Crash won for Best Motion Picture, shocking those who bet on gay cowboy flick, Brokeback Mountain, as the favorite to win.
